Diary kept by Oliver A. Ricker of Lawrence, Mass., a private in Co. C of the Mass. 40th Infantry Regiment from 1 Jan. - 4 Sep. 1863. Entries describe camp life and picket duties around the Washington area; his lameness due to a bad hip; hospitalization at the Harwood General Hospital for typhoid fever and his hip; transfer to the Lovell General Hospital in Portsmouth Grove, R.I. via the hospital ship Daniel Webster; time spent there; and return to Boston and Lawrence following his discharge due to illness in May of 1863. Also includes a few misc. papers related to his military career, 1863-84.
